Department Mangers...Merchandise Supervisors

It will change at all Walmarts during the new year. This is what I have been told.
Right now department managers in charge of one department may be asked to take on additional departments. I would think they will wait for some to step down or will make it intolerable for some...possibly even coach some to make them step down.
It should be something like dept. 8/4/13 as one area 1/18/82 another etc. Most will have three departments.
They may leave sporting goods and electronics as is because of the volume and the laws for selling guns.
They are trying to change the schedules to make them 8-5 8-5 10-7 1-10 and 1-10 alternating weekends off.
There should be at least 1.5 sales associates during the first two shifts and the stockers will be rotated throughout the store. Thirty at a time when they have that many. No one is supposed to belong to any steady department.
Our stores have had numerous managers step down and quit. Assistant Managers are leaving and stepping down and no one is being replaced with full time workers.
If you request a transfer to another store be careful or you could be reclassified as part time.

It depends on the state you live in and the way the store does things. Some may ask you to do things you would rather not do.
My daughter is a merchandise manager at a supercenter and has just come off overnights for two weeks...is working 12 hour shifts for the last week and a half starting at 4am but it isn't going to last with the over time and all.
They just can't hire. NO one wants to take a job there.
In some states it is against the law. In some stores they don't care they will fix it to make it look like you aren't doing it. If you are in a good store they will adhere to law.

this group is a hard working group and accomplishes a lot for the store/departments. And very little recogintion is given to them, and at times I have seen that the assistant manager has given then a lot of authority to do changes so he/she can look good to his immediate supevisor, D.M., etc.

I am a new wal-mart employee, I have been around the block a few times.I would like to kow why wal-mart is getting such a bad rap?? If you put yourself out in the real world, all companies are going to the more work and less pay, with less benifits. Hard work and sacrifice has made the red white and blue. I have had five rises in the past 8 months plus other insintives. I work hard and get rewarded for it. Most wal-mart nockers need a reality check, and a Educaction. You forgot to tell peopl that the new system is set up to where your work load is the same. teams are made to do certian job functions that were the Deptment mangers job, and so on. When all said and done don't be affraid of a little hard work, and don't forget thats why we are who we are today, THE USA

help!

as 4 year DM at a store, i have found the workload increasing and support decreasing. one example of this is now a new shelf availability program that is now in place. we were told last week by our market manager that if a certain percentage number is not met, then we will either be coached or terminated. is this a new company policy? this is just another added task to my job, and yet i have gotten little to no help from management to help me meet this goal. i feel as if they are trying to force me out.

i know this to be true myself.They are reducing our inventory while yelling at us if we are out of stock on an item.We are not allowed to manual order unless for features or we are completely out of stock. How are we suppose to get in stock when we can't manually order and the shelf stays empty until the warehouse actually gets the items to us?

I am employed at a walmart supercenter in Az. At the moment we have a grand total of 176 employees. We have a total of 4 people in grocery ics and 4 in gm ics, and it is getting as bad overnight, often as few as 5 people for grocery and at least 4 departments in gm without a stocker.Yet we are still expected to make the store a profit and be in tip top order for the days buisness, and of course with no overtime, unless of course you have the VP coming in on monday and then the department managers are told they have to work sat and sun whether they like it or not....Walmart is really starting to suck..they are saturating the market for jobs by bulding to close together...

i am currently a wal-mart associate and right now what they are doing is cutting back on all hourly mgr positions, decreasing their pay but still giving them the same work load in order to lower wages, plus all the hire is part-time people that way the don't have to offer you benefits until you have been employed their for two years which many people get pissed off by the first 90- days and usually quit. I am currently a MANAGER and i see how the plot to fire certain people just because so that is why now i pray everyday that i find me another job, because they are so short handed and they try to make one person work 3 different deparments and then try to coach them for lack of performance now that crazy. SO FOR ANYONE IN THE DALLAS AREA DON'T WORK THE SEAGOVILLE STORE #5288 THEY ARE VERY LOW DOWN CHEATERS AND SAY ANYTHING TO GET YOU TO QUIT OR FIRED AND UP YOURS JIMMY KINSER

I started working for wal-mart and was so disillusioned. I am so disappointed with me choice to work at wal-mart. No one cares about us as associates. My friend was told that he either had to choose work or school by our new store manager. For a while my friend got 7 hours a week and one week I think got 1 hour. My friend called home office several times and finally figured out from what they said that our new store manager had been making or schedule for a long while trying to cut out the people who really wanted to be there and the people who didn't. The manager also has told people that if they leave there is 3 more people waiting to take our place. but there are not near enough workers as it is. So we aren't wanted or needed. That doesn't make anyone want to work. and we do all the work and managers will still get a bonus but us associates don't. No wonder the quality has suffered. I thank you Julia for starting this site. maybe it will open the eyes of everyone out there. I appreciate it very much! THANK YOU.

i am an associate @ walmart supercenter..have been for three years sometimes i dont know how long i will be there...i feel alot of stress sometimes i have 5 depts to run and i cant do my dept mgr obligations due to understaffing..most of the time i have to stock and am adviced to plug my whole dept...i have 2 associates under me and it is impossible to have everything picture perfect with a skeleton crew...there is no sense in doing modulars if mgmt advice ics and associtates to plug everything...tired....

I'm a associate for walmart for 19 yrs, and my husband got my daughter a job as a cashier, when they hired her, she made it very clear that she has band,and sometimes she needs certain days off, well the store manager said that was okay, we will work with that,the first week was hell,the front end manager roy ask my daughter if she was ever going to work, she repeatly said she can only work certain days, we gave the manager her band schedule 4-5 times,this was going on for 3-4 months,the band director called the store manager and told him about my daughters shedule he made it look like that he never knew about my daughter being in band, they also told her that if she had any problems about her schedule she needs to come to them and not her parents,I think if walmart managers would just take the time to listen and not judge right away, I know that it is not easy to be a manager, but it is not easy being a walmart associate when you have so many managers under you, if sam walton was still alive walmart would not be bad shape, he was for respect, customer service and listening to your associates.

I couldn't agree more. I spent 1 year at Wal-Mart and it felt like it was 10 years or more. The days seemed to pass by without ends.I was always in charge of my department, with 5 baskets of returns and they kept coming. Finally,I left because I couldn't take the stress anymore and when I left they replaced me with 2 persons. I felt so used because I was doing the work of 2 people and they never even recognized my hard work. But that's over now!!!!

I have worked for Wal-Mart for 15 years and I am waiting for this big change. It is all about change at least that is what we have been told,all these years. I too believe Sam is rolling over in his grave, this isn't what he believed in.

A my share bonus? This is wonderful, just wonderful and look I work for 0376 the most profit making store in the area. We have more customers than a body could possible count and not near enough employees, so hey, shouldn't my bonus be a biggie?
You'd think so, especially when our inventory came out grrrreat....
We start to hear rumors of what other nearby store, smaller stores with less profit are getting.$800 dollars to one- $1100 to another $1400 to one in a tiny burg 35 miles away, buut what does bossier city's only Wal-mart get to reward overworked employees?

Story is untrue. Wal-Mart wants to make money, you do not move people from department to department to deparment if you want to make money. Why is this? If someone knows the ins and outs of the department, how to do everything, how to talk to the customers for that department, then they might not do so well in another, They want people that know what their doing in each department.

Assistant Managers control multiple departments, I could understand merging some departments, like clothes. but they want a department manager to know what needs to be done for the department they work in, specialize in that.

ATM a DM of Infants and girls but waiting for weekend to pass to see if i still have a job due to the D day they gave me.

To help you know where i stand... oUr store manager for one knows nothing NOTHING about apparal sales and how it is run , all he cares about is foods so they get all the staffing;there are 4 of us 1 mens boys 1 acces. 1 womens and maturnaty and me infants girls...we got no one else in the daytime to help us NO ONE AT ALL, I for one only have a 2nd shift person 3 days a week!!! ; We have only 1... i repeat ONE!!!!!! Over nighter for all of apparal that hasent even been trained right and dosnt even work my infant hardlines. The other department managers where not trained right and i have to show them what and how to do things and end up haveing to do it for them(picklists , need to counts [wich theres range in the hundereds] negative on hands, and so on)when we are told to work together .. gess what we work THERE stuff , the prossesing area.. where my bin is conveniently is located is filled with pallets of stuff overnights didnt work and i cant get to it at ALLL!!!!! i help everyone out and get no help lest they are made to....got a new assistent over that area... he was told to find someone to make an exsample of or he would get couched... well it was me (joy)this before even i mention to you that the whole week we where in mens as the DM is on vacation doing the department flip and the whole week i was also not allowed to work on my department cuz "we will get to it after" so for 5 days no one was in there and it wasnt buy choice; so in the end i do everything they ask of me , i help everybody out and get none back i TEACH.. omg TEACH an assistent mnager how to understand softlines as i run whats going on all week and what do i get .. A GOOD OLD TRIP UNDER THE BUS TO COVER THERE ASSES!!

And to make it even worse the manager has the GALLLLL TO BRING UP A PERSONAL AT HOME PROBLEM I AM HAVEING AND MAKE IT A PART OF THE COUCHING (me and my wife lost our son of 5 months)SAYING THAT HE KNOWS WHERE I AM COMMING FROM ,HOW I AM FEELING , THAT HE...OMG HE HAD IT HAPPEN TO HIM 3 TIMES AND THANK GOD HE FINALLY GOT TO KEEP HIS LAST ONE ....WELL WOW GOLLY GEE MR.BOSS MAN THAT MAKES ME FEEL MUCH BETTER YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR SON WITH YOU TILL YOU DIE AND MINE DIED , THANK YOU MR BOSS MAN CUZ YOUKNOW I CAN JUST HAVE ANOTHER ONE AND THAT WILL MAKE THINGS ALL BETTER NOW WONT IT JACKASS AS YOU RUB IT IN MY FACE AS YOU DANGLE MY JOB WICH I ACCUALY LIKE AND WORK MY ASS OFF FOR(last week 80+ hours for inventory)WHILE NO ONE ELSE WOULD STAY FOR 1 MIN TO HELP AS YOU ALSO HAVE YOUR 25 YEAR OLD FRIEND WHO ALSO IS GETTING PAYED A DM SALARY EVEN THO THEY DONT HAVE A DEPARTMENT GOSE AROUND AND DOSE NOTHING!!! Our maket manager was there before the couching... she is my only savior there... she knows how hard i work and how i care for my job.. as she left she told me my job is safe cuz i do everything i should be doing and as i am told to ..... she leaves i get couched....oh common mr. boss man .dont you have the ability to do it n front of her.

These people here complaining about walmart is the reason our company is looking bad in the media. Im a dept manger and I like my job. Some of u need to stop looking at the bad in everything that goes on in a day of work at walmart. Be glad your working, cut hours, shift changes, weekends, or 3rd shift, cause u could be unenployed. But that would probaly make half of you happy cause u could get your unenplyment checks in the mail while you sit on the couch everyday. Which getting rid of people like these would make me happy cause then we could get some real work done and back to the real reason we clock in each day, the customes. We should take time and put ourselves in their shoes. They shouldn't have to come in our stores and not be pleased, much less hear our own employes complaining about their jobs, the customes are our job. they bring us our paychecks everyday. If u dont like working for walmart then find another job u babys. Our company makes it clear we are to help every customer and we know what happens if they're not taken care of. So grow up and do some work for a change, and stop all the fuss about every little thing that goes on that doesn't go your way.

Learn it, the more work you do....the more shit they pile on ur plate to do and the worst they treat you. The people who just do enough work to not get fired are the ones they leave alone. Being a claims supervisor, stocking, unloading trunks, bagging, pushing carts and zoning for one hour all in one day then being coached for slipping on my claims dutys really makes you hate the 8-9 preggo cashers, the 300 year old door greeter and the retarded guy that can't read but is suppose to rotate the milk that we are wasting payroll on.

Welcome to the real Walmart. I have been there 19 years and WALMART gives a raise once per year for your yearly evaluation. What store is this? I think we all need to transfer to that store.

I have worked for Wal*Mart for an entire year now and have decided that our store is one of the most disorganized stores I have ever worked for. The salaried Management team could not care less about the people that work under tham as long as they get their bonus. As an associate I have not seen one quarterly bonus this year, but have watched and listened to management talk about how their bonus was great. We are constantly told that we are the backbone of the company in one hand while the other hand is beating an already understaffed shift with the big stick. I thought Wal*Mart could be a pretty good career move but have learned that if you work hard, do your job then move on to help others, you get to keep doing it, no promotions in sight if you are a hard worker, they can't afford to move you up the career ladder who would do the hard work. I am sick and tired of watching the same suck ups do nothing for a whole shift. I think it is time to move on and leave. Oh and when you hear about how great Wal*Mart is, you will usually find that it is a Manager or a new employee that is spouting off about how great a company it is.

I am a zone supervisor for our store. We work 8-5 and 11-8 shifts. Two weekends a month off and one half and then work a full one. I have consumables which is 6 departments. Our assistants are working 12 hours shifts and three days on three days off. The ZMS position is a good step up if you are interested in going to salaried. We are the right hand to the assistant in our area.

Good morning. This is why I believe anyone can make a career out of walmart. Prior to, I have had no retail experience, nor management experience. Advancement opportunities are there, for those willing to put the effort in.

I have worked for walmart for almost two years now. I started out on Day ICS at $9/hr. At the six month mark, there was an opening for an over night Support manager. So I figured what the heck, I went for it and got it. That boosted me from a pay grade 3, to a pay grade 7+$1/hr shift differential. Recently, however, I am back on days as the ZMS over Consumables(Div 1 store). In just under two years, with hard work, and a willingness to learn new things, and open availability, I am currently at $13.95/hr. As of March 15th, I will be at $14.35/hr. I have had two exceeds performance ratings(90 day, and 1 year revue, both on the old 3 tier rating system), and my latest being a Solid Performer(on the new 5 tier system).

Sure, Wal-mart has its issues, but find me a job that doesn't..

I for one am very pleased with my job, and I look forward to going everyday.

Ive been with Wal-Mart nearly seven years and currently see alot of changes,this is good now asa a amanager we can finally cut down on the internal theft,taking 20 min breaks costing the company money now the associate will finally be held accountable for poor performance,taking longer breaks than allowed,not completing daily assigned task,etc,finally some structure....this has been a problem for years associates getting away with breaking policies if you dont like it go to Target they have no structure you can be lazy theyre,we dont need you.............

it would be quite interesting to start a study about stress related deaths in Wal-Marts. In talking to other associates and reading these postings, this is a growing concern. AS far as any of you on this site that think we, as DM"s are crybabies- I have news for you: do our job consistently and come again: until then, you have no clue about the physical and especially mental stress that is being inflicted on us- laws classify this as a hazardous work environment. Why are we still there? Because three years ago, we all liked our jobs and took great pride; now, the economy has given this employer the advantage and we are "stuck". In our store, 80% of all DM's want to step down, but are not allowed to. Does that give a clue? As far as one reader posting this education thing: let me tell you that there are a few of us with higher educations and more degrees than top management. It amounts to nothing at all. Internal favors rule the promotion system to a point that even the ethic hot line caters to it. "We are an outside third party hired by Walmart- you have to follow the chain of command." In our store, there is no open-door policy or sun-down rule and complaining too much will lead to coaching over pull-by-the-hair things to start a termination trail. Is the District aware? Oh, yes, they are. Do they care? Take a guess... I just know that this company will, one day, when the economy allows it, be in for a rude awakening.
